Housatonic

Housatonic is technically a small village located at the northeastern tip of Great Barrington, but what it lacks in size in makes up for in attitude. Once a booming mill town that experienced a period of decline following the mill closing and a series of devastating fires, Housatonic has risen from the ashes to become one of the Berkshires’ greatest success stories.

Located along the stunning banks of the Housatonic River, Housatonic is a favorite subject for area photographers and painters, and offers scenic biking, walking, and cross-country skiing. While it was originally a residence for mill workers, a revitalized, energetic community of early and mid-career professionals and their families, longtime locals, and artists now populate the town. Children can take part in regular basketball games at the Housy Dome, as part of the perennially popular Housatonic Youth Basketball League. A largely noncommercial town, it’s home to several galleries, plus unique dining and entertainment venues. Because Housatonic is just a few minutes’ drive to Stockbridge and Great Barrington, it’s a great halfway point for taking in the culture, outdoors, and shopping of both Northern and Southern Berkshire County.
